GEAR UP Rally to help students prepare for college

Education Service Center Region 12 in Texas hosted a GEAR UP Rally with 2,600 sixth and seventh grade GEAR UP students. The rally introduced GEAR UP to the students and aimed to motivate them to start thinking about college and career.

Great Graduates: Lucero Castaneda, Somerset High School

The 2016 Youth of the Year, Lucero Yamilet Castañeda, also has big plans for college. Lucero will graduate from Somerset Independent School District in Texas this spring, and this fall she will be the first person from her high school to attend Harvard University. Reality of Money

In North Carolina, GEAR UP students that are part of the Appalachian State University program had the opportunity to learn about financial responsibility through the Reality of Money simulation. The GEAR UP program partnered with a number of entities, including the State Employees’ Credit Union, to host an event in which students “transformed” into 25-year-olds and had to build a budget by visiting different stations that influenced their finances.
 
 

Education Fair unravels college obstacles

In Iowa, GEAR UP students at Ottumwa High School attended an education fair last week. Local college representatives were there to provide information about college-readiness topics. The event was to make college contacts and provide more information to parents and students to help them prepare for college.
