Local Middle School Students "Gear Up" For College

GEAR UP Alabama, in its fourth year of providing services to students in Alabama’s Black Belt, was highlighted recently. Their mentoring services, the creation of an advisory board, and other achievements were described in the article, along with their summer plans. Great work is happening in GEAR UP across the country!
Great Graduates: Lucero Castaneda, Somerset High School
The 2016 Youth of the Year, Lucero Yamilet Castañeda, also has big plans for college. Lucero will graduate from Somerset Independent School District in Texas this spring, and this fall she will be the first person from her high school to attend Harvard University. In North Carolina, GEAR UP students that are part of the Appalachian State University program had the opportunity to learn about financial responsibility through the Reality of Money simulation. The GEAR UP program partnered with a number of entities, including the State Employees’ Credit Union, to host an event in which students “transformed” into 25-year-olds and had to build a budget by visiting different stations that influenced their finances.
Education Fair unravels college obstacles
In Iowa, GEAR UP students at Ottumwa High School attended an education fair last week. Local college representatives were there to provide information about college-readiness topics. The event was to make college contacts and provide more information to parents and students to help them prepare for college.
