UAB GEAR UP Alabama volunteers take trip to mentor students
GEAR UP Alabama was highlighted in local news for their trips across the Black Belt region to work with students. Volunteers spend time moving from school to school to mentor GEAR UP students and inspire them to pursue a postsecondary education. Their next trip is March 2nd!

The GEAR UP team from Eastern Oklahoma was highlighted in their local newspaper for their attendance at the 2018 NCCEP/GEAR UP Capacity-Building Workshop. The team highlighted the various Burst speakers and various sessions they attended.
Program helps students aspire to more education after high school
Maine GEAR UP, currently in year four of their seven-year grant, was highlighted in the Sun Journal for their work with students. From advising to college visits, school staff are helping prepare students for college and beyond.

In Florida, over 100 GEAR UP students and parents participated in the I’m A Star Foundation’s Family Empowerment Forum and College Fair, complete with a marching band! I’m A Star will continue to serve GEAR UP students through mentorship and parenting empowerment forums.
Ada City Schools selected as Oklahoma GEAR UP IV school district
In Oklahoma, Ada County Schools are excited to be part of the state GEAR UP program. In a targeted way, GEAR UP will provide collaboration and leadership opportunities for school staff so that they can better serve students and families.

Lockhart ISD awarded $1.89 million GEAR UP grant to prepare Class of 2023 for college

The grant program, Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP), is funded by the US Department of Education in partnership with the University of Texas at Austin. LISD is one of eight Texas school districts selected this school year to participate in the program, which provides support to students in this cohort beginning this school year through their first year in college.
Current LISD seventh graders will receive access to advanced academic courses, college advising and counseling, mentoring and academic tutoring, and participate in college tours and job site visits. Additionally, parents of participating students will benefit from support to learn more about postsecondary readiness, college options, and ways to pay for college.
Texting is Helping W.Va. Students Get Ahead in Higher Ed
West Virginia GEAR UP implemented a texting program to determine if texting can help students persist in their first year of college. Results show that students were 7% more likely to persist when they received text message reminders; this number is 8% for students from rural areas. San Marcos CISD is celebrating, and rightly so. The district recently learned that it had been awarded a University of Texas – Austin GEAR UP grant that will benefit hundreds of students. The $2.8 million grant over 7 years is intended to increase academic performance, college readiness, the rate of high school graduation and postsecondary enrollment and the knowledge of students and their families about college options, preparation, and funding. It is targeted to follow the district’s 575 seventh-grade students through their freshman year in college.
