Are there any Incredibles fans out there?
I am an unabashed fan of Disney’s The Incredibles franchise. Yes, I am a 33-year-old adult that loves animated movies.
Spoiler alert ahead.
The Incredibles is a story about a family of superheroes, forced into hiding their powers, and ultimately relegated to a life of normalcy. That is, until the world needs their help to stop a villain. The Incredibles don their superhero suits, defeat the villain, and they save the day!
Now, the story is much more complexed (as complex as an animated movie can be) than what I’ve described. However, there is a lesson to be learned here. That lesson is—we need heroes!
We can drop the capes, leotards, and gold boots.
Nevertheless, we need people that can inspire and encourage us to act. Psychologist John Haidt uses the term “elevation” to describe this phenomenon. Elevation is what happens when we see someone do something that is noble or heroic. It is a feeling of admiration, but it can also inspire others to do good as well.
Think about the GEAR UP community. Can you think of anyone that inspires you to do good? Can you think of anyone that evokes a feeling of admiration or awe? Do you have a name or face? They are the GEAR UP heroes that we want to recognize.
The NCCEP/GEAR UP Leadership Awards nomination process opened just over a month ago. If you are looking for a way to acknowledge the inspiring work of your heroes, this it! Submit your nomination for the GEAR UP student, professional, community partner, and/or family leader of the year.
This acknowledgment isn’t just about awarding those that deserve it, it is also about inspiring others to be great. Click here to nominate your GEAR UP hero and to learn more about the Leadership Awards.
“You have more power than you realize. Don't think, and don't worry. If the time comes, you'll know what to do. It's in your blood.”

Another Incredibles fan here! I want to especially call on all 2014 GEAR UP grantees to use this opportunity to think back to all of those heroes that have supported your grant over the course of the 7 years. Who deserves that special acknowledgement? AND, as always, NCCEP is here for you should you have any questions about your applications. Danielle Walker and I are happy to help!
