7th Graders Attend College Fair Embarking on 7 Year Success Journey
In Florida, over 100 GEAR UP students and parents participated in the I’m A Star Foundation’s Family Empowerment Forum and College Fair, complete with a marching band! I’m A Star will continue to serve GEAR UP students through mentorship and parenting empowerment forums.
San Marcos CISD is celebrating, and rightly so. The district recently learned that it had been awarded a University of Texas – Austin GEAR UP grant that will benefit hundreds of students. The $2.8 million grant over 7 years is intended to increase academic performance, college readiness, the rate of high school graduation and postsecondary enrollment and the knowledge of students and their families about college options, preparation, and funding. It is targeted to follow the district’s 575 seventh-grade students through their freshman year in college.

Lockhart ISD awarded $1.89 million GEAR UP grant to prepare Class of 2023 for college

The grant program, Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP), is funded by the US Department of Education in partnership with the University of Texas at Austin. LISD is one of eight Texas school districts selected this school year to participate in the program, which provides support to students in this cohort beginning this school year through their first year in college.
Current LISD seventh graders will receive access to advanced academic courses, college advising and counseling, mentoring and academic tutoring, and participate in college tours and job site visits. Additionally, parents of participating students will benefit from support to learn more about postsecondary readiness, college options, and ways to pay for college.
Ada City Schools selected as Oklahoma GEAR UP IV school district
In Oklahoma, Ada County Schools are excited to be part of the state GEAR UP program. In a targeted way, GEAR UP will provide collaboration and leadership opportunities for school staff so that they can better serve students and families.
Texting is Helping W.Va. Students Get Ahead in Higher Ed
West Virginia GEAR UP implemented a texting program to determine if texting can help students persist in their first year of college. Results show that students were 7% more likely to persist when they received text message reminders; this number is 8% for students from rural areas. OMA&D Receives $36.6 Million in New Grants and Renewals
The University of Washington announced that they have a number of grants, including GEAR UP, that will help students become prepared to succeed in their future endeavors. Their GEAR UP grant will serve 5,355 students across three small, rural, agriculture-based counties.
Free online ACT prep offered for MHS juniors
In North Carolina, high school juniors at McDowell County Schools have access to free ACT tutoring through GEAR UP. Their GEAR UP facilitator, Pat Gross, emphasized the importance of the ACT test and is helping students access the tutoring.
Career day program offered to area middle schoolers
About 650 GEAR UP students from six communities in Washington will visit Walla Wall Community College in March to learn more about college and career opportunities. Three unique presentations will take place for students based on their interests. Members of the community are welcome to attend and learn more about the college and career readiness.
North Beach District receives seven-year federal grant
North Beach Schools, part of the Washington State GEAR UP grant, are incredibly excited to implement the GEAR UP program. They started serving seventh graders this year and look forward to helping these students prepare for their futures. Deborah Holcomb, the superintendent, said this, “We’re building our future together, unlocking potential in one student at a time.”
