S.A. school districts made all eighth-graders take algebra — and it worked

Eighth-graders in Southwest Independent School District passed their standardized math exams at a rate 8 percentage points below the state average last year — but something different was going on at the district’s Scobee Middle School.
There, for the first time, all eighth-graders had the opportunity to take Algebra I a year earlier than normal. The vast majority accepted the challenge, and 90 percent passed the state’s standardized Algebra I exam on the first try.
Two districts in the To College & Beyond GEAR UP grant exchanged best practices to get a head start in Algebra 1 prep before the GEAR UP cohort arrives next year.
Foster students get first-hand look at college at KSU event
Kennesaw State University, part of the GEAR UP Georgia grant, hosted a “signing day” for GEAR UP students to show them what it feels like to sign up for college. Students heard from a motivational speaker and had the chance to meet college students from Greek fraternity and sorority organization. They left feeling inspired to pursue their dreams!

‘Impressive feat:’ Students in Milwaukee Public Schools earn record $86M in scholarships
In Milwaukee Public Schools, GEAR UP students are breaking records. Last year’s GEAR UP seniors received a record $64 million in scholarship offers, but the class of 2018 topped that record with $86,247,467 in scholarship offers.
GEAR UP Georgia kicks off Muscogee County Summer Leadership Academy
The GEAR UP Georgia Summer Leadership Academy kicked off earlier this month, over 800 GEAR UP Georgia students entering their freshman year of high school went to Columbus State University for the academy. They learned more about enhancing their communication skills and working together more effectively.
Louisiana GEAR UP to offer enrichment programs this summer
Louisiana GEAR UP is getting ready for summer! They are partnering with local universities to offer students from sixteen middle schools summer learning programs that focus on academic enrichment, skills development, and college preparation.
