LHS Gives Students a Dose of Reality
At Laramie High School in Wyoming, GEAR UP students attended “Reality Town.” At this event, students interacted with over 20 businesses to figure out how they would budget to makes ends meet. They were given a pamphlet with income and the like, then had to determine how they would use the money for groceries, entertainment, and other expenses.

Comet Career Fair attracts strong participation
Over 200 Oregon GEAR UP students in the Naselle-Grays River Valley School District and the Wahkiakum School District attended the 2nd Comet Career Fair. Students were able to talk with upwards of 70 college, career, technical, and military representatives at the fair to learn more about options for their futures.

UW Student from Evanston to Conduct Genetics Research
Wyoming GEAR UP alumni, Alexandra “Monique” Weaver, was recently accepted to a competitive Ph.D. program in genetics at the University of Iowa. She credits GEAR UP and the McNair Scholars Program as helping her enter college and become prepared to pursue her education even further and enter a competitive Ph.D. program.

Savanna GEAR UP students tour the Oklahoma Aquarium
Eastern Oklahoma GEAR UP students from Savanna Public Schools visited an Aquarium in Jenks. The Savanna Public Schools students enjoyed Sea Turtle Island, the shark tunnel, and feeding stingrays and turtles. These hands-on experiences for sixth and seventh graders are aimed to help them start thinking about potential careers.

High school students get introduced to urban planning at UCLA
Students in the GEAR UP 4 LA program spent time with students, professors, and professionals from the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) Luskin School of Public Affairs. During this program, GEAR UP students learned more about the field of urban planning and the impact it can have on communities. Frink-Chambers GEAR UP sixth grade visit the Oklahoma Aquarium
Eastern Oklahoma GEAR UP students from Frink-Chambers, visited an Aquarium in Jenks. The Frink-Chambers had a regular tour of the facilities, and then had a “behind-the-scenes” tour to learn more about aquatic life.
