Samantha Elliott Briggs: Educator and champion of students
One of our own GEAR UP directors and a member of NCCEP’s GEAR UP Advisory Commission, Dr. Samantha Elliott Briggs at GEAR UP Alabama, was highlighted for her work as a social-justice educator. With the inspiration and support of her family, particularly her mother and father, Dr. Elliott Briggs has pursued a life of social consciousness and has raised her children in that environment.
At Graham High, UNC campus tours go virtual
North Carolina GEAR UP students at Graham High School toured sixteen University of North Carolina (UNC) campuses recently – without leaving their school auditorium. These students took part in UNCs inaugural virtual college tour, then had a chance to meet with college representatives at a college fair to discuss their options after high school.

Smithsonian scientists to teach Lafayette Parish classes
The Lafayette Parish School System GEAR UP program will host scientists from The Smithsonian Institution. The scientists will teach a lesson in which students will conduct hands-on experiments to encourage interest in science.

TRIO And GEAR UP Students Attend 2018 New England Student Leadership Conference
Fifty-two GEAR UP and TRIO students across New England participated in a three-day leadership conference late last month. These students were selected to attend the event, where they participated in a ropes course, leadership development workshop, and other activities aimed to build their leadership skills and prepare them for postsecondary education.

Mind over machine: Valley students work nuts and bolts of HESTEC’s Robotics Day
As part of the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley’s (UTRGV) GEAR UP program, students participated in a Hispanic Engineering, Science and Technology (HESTEC) Week. GEAR UP students had the chance to build robots in the week’s leading up to HESTEC Week and showed off their hard work in competitions.
Excelencia in Education Announces the 2018 Examples of Excelencia
The College Crusade of Rhode Island, part of the GEAR UP community, was recently recognized by Excelencia in Education for its outstanding work with Latino youth. Evidence-based results indicate that Latino students served by The College Crusade of Rhode Island are 27% more likely to immediately enroll in college and 43% more likely to persist to the second year of college than their peers in a comparison group. Nine GEAR UP students in West Virginia were awarded $1,000 scholarships from West Liberty University to use upon attendance at the institution.
Students attend SCSU through GEAR UP
GEAR UP students in Connecticut are entering their first year of postsecondary education, and one school is looking forward to helping the students in their cohort succeed. The New Haven cohort of Connecticut GEAR UP students have a number of students attending Southern Connecticut State University, where they will continue to receive GEAR UP services to help them succeed in their first year of college.
Students get motivated at West Virginia GEAR UP Academy
Over 1,400 West Virginia GEAR UP student convened in Charleston for a leadership academy, during which they heard from a number of speakers, developed leadership skills and talents, and had a scholarship ceremony.

October is College Application Month for the state of Louisiana
The Louisiana GEAR UP program in conjunction with the Lafayette GEAR UP program launched their very own Louisiana College Application Week in 2013 as part of the larger National College Application Week movement. Five years later, the success has been seen far and wide in Louisiana, and the initiative was expanded from one week to the entire month of October with all Louisiana high schools invited to participate.
