OMA&D Receives $36.6 Million in New Grants and Renewals
The University of Washington announced that they have a number of grants, including GEAR UP, that will help students become prepared to succeed in their future endeavors. Their GEAR UP grant will serve 5,355 students across three small, rural, agriculture-based counties.
Free online ACT prep offered for MHS juniors
In North Carolina, high school juniors at McDowell County Schools have access to free ACT tutoring through GEAR UP. Their GEAR UP facilitator, Pat Gross, emphasized the importance of the ACT test and is helping students access the tutoring.
Career day program offered to area middle schoolers
About 650 GEAR UP students from six communities in Washington will visit Walla Wall Community College in March to learn more about college and career opportunities. Three unique presentations will take place for students based on their interests. Members of the community are welcome to attend and learn more about the college and career readiness.
Kids need late night help with homework? Some Bibb County students can get it here
In Bibb County, Georgia, GEAR UP students have access to online tutoring twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. These students can pick their tutors, select favorite tutors, and seek help anytime to gain the confidence and skills they need to excel in the classroom.
North Beach District receives seven-year federal grant
North Beach Schools, part of the Washington State GEAR UP grant, are incredibly excited to implement the GEAR UP program. They started serving seventh graders this year and look forward to helping these students prepare for their futures. Deborah Holcomb, the superintendent, said this, “We’re building our future together, unlocking potential in one student at a time.”

Mingus Union on schedule to graduate roughly 270 seniors, with 86 percent planning for college

Gear Up teaches ‘spirit of exploration’
GEAR UP seniors at Mingus Union High School in Arizona are getting ready to launch into their futures. The soon-to-be-graduates have spent the last six years exploring what their futures could be and preparing diligently for that future. Of the 270 seniors, 86% plan to pursue a postsecondary education.
Education Program Bestows Positivity on More Than Just Students
GEAR UP not only makes a lasting impact on students’ lives. One facilitator says the program gave her a sense of purpose.
Sylvia Vargas said it’s more than just a job.
“I have a purpose, that’s the best way I would put it. It makes me feel that I’m sowing a seed and I’m excited to see what comes out of it in four, five years,” said Vargas.
