GEAR UP grantees with students enrolled in the first year of postsecondary education are increasingly looking to peer-mentoring and support programs to increase retention of students who are identified as most at-risk of dropping out or needing academic support. Indeed, research does show that peer mentoring programs can positively impact student outcomes, particularly for first-generation students. In this article, The Benefits of Academically Oriented Peer Mentoring for At-Risk Student Populations, the authors provide an overview of the design, implementation, and evaluation of one peer-mentoring program at a large, urban, private university. Beyond a description of the program and an analysis of the outcome, the article also provides practical recommendations, based on lessons learned, that can be useful for other organizations looking to design their own peer mentoring program.
