Redesigning the Capacity-Building Workshop
Our yearly February event, the Capacity-Building Workshop, has gone fully virtual and we are redesigning it to better meet the needs of our GEAR UP community.

Last November, Alex Chough shared with directors that the NCCEP/GEAR UP Capacity-Building Workshop will continue to be virtual to maintain quality professional development at an affordable price. This shift provided an opportunity to rethink the event: what we address, how we address it, and the best ways to leverage this gathering for our national community.
NCCEP's Process
Using a design thinking process, the NCCEP team is collecting information about the needs and preferences of GEAR UP professionals to inform the redesign.
- Review survey data from the last three virtual Capacity-Building Workshops
- Create empathy maps for the key audiences
- Collect input from our Communications and Family Engagement Committees and discuss what works or could be improved
- Convene five directors in a short-term Discovery Lab (April & May) to review input, empathy maps, and support the redesign. Participants include:
- Melissa Lopez, Region One ESC GEAR UP
- Jacque Deahl, GEAR UP Idaho
- Lindsay Williams, K20 Center at The University of Oklahoma
- Christopher Mutshnick, UCSC Educational Partnership Center-GEAR UP
- Rebeccah Lystash, GEAR UP Virginia
- Launch global survey to collect larger GEAR UP community input
- Create options to consider for February 2024
